Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, a footballer for Greenock Morton in Scotland’s Second Division, has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the trafficking of two suitcases containing 60 kilos of cannabis, with an estimated value of 600,000 pounds (about $744,000).

According to EFE, the 33-year-old striker faces drug trafficking charges and is due to appear before the Carlisle courts on Thursday.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) arrested two women on September 2 as they arrived at Stansted Airport from Bangkok with suitcases containing cannabis.

Emmanuel-Thomas, who was part of Arsenal’s youth system and played for clubs including Livingston, Aberdeen, Ipswich Town, Bristol City and Queens Park Rangers, has been linked to the case. He also played for PTT Rayong in the Thai league.

This year, the NCA issued warnings to travellers from Thailand, Canada and the United States about the severe legal consequences for trafficking cannabis, recalling that three times as much of the drug has been seized compared to 2023.

In the UK, the maximum penalty for cannabis trafficking can be up to fourteen years in prison.
