The number 12 prospect in all of Major League Baseball, Luisangel Acuña, made his debut with the New York Mets last Saturday. And in just five games with the Queens team, he is already beginning to write his own story.
The young Venezuelan infielder is starting to create his own personality, far removed from “Ronald Acuña’s brother.” He has even already broken his first record as a Mets player.
Luisangel hit his second consecutive home run with the Mets on Wednesday, in just five games in the Major Leagues. His average rose to .467 with four RBIs and seven hits.
In fact, his last game against the Nationals, where he went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a home run, set a record for the Queens franchise.
The youngest of the Acuña brothers becomes the first player in Mets history to debut in the Major Leagues with at least three consecutive games with more than one hit.
Even this start to a career in the Major Leagues is the best for a Venezuelan rookie. Luisangel Acuña thus surpasses legends such as Oscar Azocar when he debuted in the 1990 season and Maglio Ordóñez in the 1997 campaign.
Praise from his manager
This excellent start in the Major Leagues was highlighted by his manager, fellow Venezuelan Carlos Mendoza, who commented after Wednesday’s game that “he is simply calm, prepared. It is as if he belongs to the Major Leagues.”
Acuña is currently playing shortstop for the Mets due to Francisco Lindor’s injury. Although his natural position is second base, the young Venezuelan has also excelled defensively.
