Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti stressed that the demands of players and coaches to reduce the number of games in a season are not aimed at changing the current calendar, and that he is convinced that “they have no problem lowering their salaries if they play less.”
In a press conference reported by EFE, Ancelotti stressed that “football needs to reflect because the objective is to try to play fewer games to avoid injuries.” He also indicated that, if the reduction in games implies a reduction in salaries, he believes that “I don’t think players would have any problem lowering their salary if they play less.”
Ancelotti, along with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, has been one of the most vocal critics of the current fixture list. After seeing how Rodri Hernandez pushed for a possible strike by players, backed by Dani Carvajal and other players from big clubs, the Italian manager has returned to the issue with the intention of seeking long-term solutions.
“This season is not going to change. The complaints of the coaches and the players are not going to change the calendar this season. It is important to reflect on this, that important organisations such as UEFA, LaLiga, FIFA are thinking that the players are getting tired,” he said.
He reiterated that “reflection is the goal” and that although the calendar for the current season will not be modified, the idea is to think about changing it in the future of football, which he considers to be the correct decision.
