Washington – US Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris on Thursday defended a ban on assault rifles, while admitting to owning a gun, during a campaign event hosted by popular presenter Oprah Winfrey.
“If anyone breaks into my house, they’re going to get shot,” Harris said with a laugh after Winfrey asked her about the gun she owns.
“I probably shouldn’t have said that. But my staff will deal with that later,” continued the Democratic candidate, who had already revealed during the last presidential debate with her Republican rival, Donald Trump, that she owns a gun.
The Democrat defended gun ownership, enshrined in the US Constitution, but also called for stricter regulations banning assault rifles, which are behind most mass shootings in the country.
During the campaign event, Harris also defended access to abortion in the United States and immigration reform that would provide more resources to the Border Patrol.
The event was hosted by Winfrey in the style of one of her television shows and featured virtual participation by Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez, among other celebrities.
