A Latino man was killed while with a group of people at a prayer vigil in Chicago’s Little Village. Police said a suspect got out of a car and opened fire on the group, wounding six others.

The crash happened at 2500 Spaulding Avenue around 10:08 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21 in the Little Village neighborhood. The group of people were in the front yard of a home praying when they were shot.

Seven people were shot and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. One of the victims was later pronounced dead.

The Cook County coroner identified the deceased as Froylan Garcia, 32, of Berwyn, Illinois.

Five men and one woman among the injured

The five injured are men and one woman. The 31-year-old was shot in the hip; the 35-year-old was grazed by one of the bullets on his head. Another man, 39, was shot in the leg and hand; the 48-year-old victim was hit in the calf, and the 51-year-old was wounded in the back.

The only female victim is about 30 years old and suffered two gunshot wounds to the leg, shoulder and hand. She is the most vulnerable. The five men are apparently out of danger, Univision Chicago reported.

No arrests

Authorities said a man parked in front of a house near where the group was holding their vigil, got out of a Jeep and began shooting at them, then ran away. No one has been arrested and no suspect in the shooting has been identified.

The shooting occurred as the ShotSpotter gunshot detection technology is being discontinued in Chicago. CBS News shared that vigil candles were still lit as officers placed shell casing markers.

On Sunday morning, officers canvassed the neighborhood, handing out flyers and asking for anyone to come forward to help with the investigation.

The case remains under investigation

The office of 25th Ward Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez issued a statement Sunday, encouraging anyone with information about the incident to contact police.

“This is a community concern and the 25th District office will continue to be in contact with the block and residents of the 2500 block of S. Spaulding Ave.,” ABC7 Chicago reported.
