Bad news for FC Barcelona. Marc-André ter Stegen suffered a knee injury in the middle of the match against Villarreal. The goalkeeper was forced to be taken off on a stretcher before the end of the first half.

The match became a struggle for FC Barcelona in the final minutes of the first half. At 38′, Nicolás Pepé provided the home team’s goal to Spanish forward Ayoze Pérez. In the midst of the defeat, at 45+2, Pepé was involved in the German’s injury.

After a great save by the Ivorian striker, the play went to a corner. In that subsequent play, Ter Stegen jumped to save the ball. After saving the ball, he injured his left knee in the fall.

The alarm bells immediately rang. The veteran goalkeeper was left lying on the pitch and the medical services had to enter the pitch to assist him. As a result, Ter Stegen had to leave on a stretcher amid a small ovation from the Barça fans present at the Estadio La Cerámica.

The German was replaced by youth player Iñaki Peña for the last seconds of the first half and the entire second half. The extent of the injury is unknown and it will not be until the medical examinations that the severity and length of the injury will be known with certainty.

Ter Stegen’s injury has made history in the record books of FC Barcelona and LaLiga. Why? He is the first Barça goalkeeper to be substituted in the first half of a La Liga match since March 26, 2014. On that occasion, it was an injury to Víctor Valdés against Celta de Vigo at the Camp Nou.
