The New York Yankees have already qualified for the postseason since last Thursday, but that has not stopped them from planning their course for the upcoming season. That is why they have made acquiring the services of Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman their main objective.
According to information from renowned journalist of The Athletic, Ken Rosental, the Yankees are on the trail of Bregman, who will enter free agency in 2025 at the end of his contract with Houston. With his incorporation, they would be looking to reinforce the third base of the Mules.
However, the arrival of the skilled hitter would have one condition: it would depend on whether or not Dominican Juan Soto signs with the Yankees.
“The Yankees could look for options in the market if they fail with Juan Soto and that would be bringing in Alex Bregman and moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base”
If Soto agrees to a multi-year contract with the Yankees, which is presumed to be worth $560 million dollars and 14 seasons, to which would be added the $36 million dollars for an additional season to Gerrit Cole’s contract to avoid the star of the rotation, it would be an excessive expense that would prevent a lucrative negotiation with Bregman.
If the deal with Soto collapses, the plan would be to sign Bregman to move Jazz Chisholm Jr. to his natural position at second base and for the American to take possession of third base.
Rosenthal also says the Yankees would have competition to sign Bregman, with teams such as the Giants, Red Sox and Dodgers among those interested in landing the two-time All-Star selection.
If Bregman lands in the Bronx, the Yankees will finally be able to solve the problem they have had at third base since they signed Josh Donaldson and it was a resounding failure.
Since then, several have played in the position, including Chisholm himself, Jon Berti (who was seriously injured at the beginning of the season after being traded from the Miami Marlins) and Venezuelan Oswaldo Cabrera, among many others.
