Big names in fashion, such as Versace, Armani and Cavalli, had already paraded, now it was the turn of designer April Black Diamond at Milan Fashion Week, who had as a special guest Emma Coronel, wife of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, who debuted as a model.
The Palazzo Serbelloni, Napoleon’s former home in Milan, with halls adorned with gilded baroque motifs, grand chandeliers and ceilings with ancient frescoes, as well as pastel-coloured flowers, witnessed the first fashion show of the former beauty queen, who was in prison for two years and seven months as of 2021.
Yesterday, El Chapo’s wife wore dresses that were very much in the “fairy tale princess” style, with tight-fitting bustiers, plunging necklines, very wide skirts full of flounces and ruffles, as well as trains over the striking designs.
It is not surprising that a large part of the market for the brand established in Los Angeles is precisely the fifteen-year-old girls on the border.
The materials used were tulle, lace, silk, satin and shantung, which were decorated with many sequined embroidery, feathers and beads, which made them shine and give them great volume.
She also wore feathered designs, as well as eye makeup with bold red eyes and a red mouth. She had eye-catching costume jewelry and even a princess-style crown.
“I think it is in bad taste and an insult to Mexico. It shows me that the fashion system is totally amoral and the only thing that matters is that it generates a lot of reactions on social media,” says Anna Fusoni, a fashion expert.
Miguel Ángel López, a well-known model manager, agreed with other members of the national fashion world that it is a purely publicity act, carried out by someone who can simply afford to pay the expenses.
“I think that, even though she was a beauty queen, this wife of a drug lord does not meet the basic requirements to parade, much less in Milan. But well, we can assume that she or her husband financially supports this designer, who is not even advertised with her real name but with a pseudonym as if it were the series ‘El Señor de los Cielos’.”
“It is not possible to pay the Fashion Week fee, rent that palace, the models, etc. and then have her big party. Everything suggests that she is generating this whole promotional campaign herself,” says the catwalk expert.
The most regrettable thing about this case, they consider, is that these two women, both the designer and the model, are achieving their goals because everyone is talking about them, a fact that does not necessarily have an impact on sales or a good image for both of them.
Previously, Coronel was presented on social media as the big star and it was promised that it would be an opportunity to see on the catwalk “a powerful woman who wanted to rewrite her future,” according to the designer herself.
She participated in the music video for the song “La Señora,” a song by her lawyer and friend Mariel Colón, who also walked the catwalk.
After two years and seven months in prison on drug trafficking and money laundering charges, she was released in November last year from a social rehabilitation centre in Long Beach, California, south of Los Angeles.
Coronel reached a plea agreement with U.S. authorities and admitted that she was the courier between Joaquín Guzmán Loera and other members of the Sinaloa Cartel when he was imprisoned in the Altiplano prison.
Mariel Colón, her lawyer and friend, said that Emma had to work as part of the conditions of probation for her federal case.

Personal information about the designer is unknown, and she does not use her real name. On Facebook, she advertises herself as a Los Angeles-based company that focuses on haute couture and world-class fashion in quinceanera dresses, wedding dresses and celebrity attire.
In November 2023, she was featured on the cover of Forbes LA, which described her in its headline as: “The new jewel of haute couture.”
This year, her designs were seen at the Cannes International Film Festival gala, as well as at the Miss Teen USA beauty pageant.
She is an investor and created two dresses for the play Aventurera, produced by Juan Osorio.
