A tragic accident occurred last Sunday at Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming, where a climber lost his life after suffering serious injuries while rappelling.

The victim, Stewart Phillip Porter, 21, died shortly before 8:00 p.m., when authorities at Devil’s Tower received a call about Porter’s fall while descending the second section of the route known as “El Cracko.”

According to the National Park Service statement, Porter suffered significant injuries that resulted in his death.

Porter’s climbing partner became trapped on the Tower wall, but was successfully rescued thanks to the intervention of climbing guides from Devils Tower Lodge and Buck Wild Climbing Guides.

Seventh death recorded at Devil’s Tower

Over more than a century of climbing history at Devil’s Tower, only seven climbing-related deaths have been recorded, according to data from the National Park Service.

The National Park Service reminded the public of the importance of following proper safety measures when climbing following Porter’s death. Recommendations include checking the local weather forecast and watching for changes in weather conditions, as well as being aware of local wildlife, including insects, birds, rodents and reptiles.

“Most accidents and deaths on the Tower occur during rappelling. The National Park Service does not maintain anchors; please inspect all anchors and adjust if necessary. Make sure you know the location of your rappelling route before you begin,” officials said.

They also recommended starting rappels on the tops of columns to avoid ropes getting stuck in cracks and using two ropes when necessary, making sure you know the planned rappel distance before you begin.
