The English team Manchester United plans to completely renovate the legendary Old Trafford and revealed the first images of its ambitious project to build a new stadium.
The new stadium, in addition to increasing the capacity to 100,000 spectators, includes community projects with the creation of shopping malls and areas for Red Devils fans to enjoy.
This plan, considered the biggest regeneration in the club’s history, was driven by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who proposes building the new stadium on land adjacent to the current site. “A place where legacies were born and legends were crowned. Where history was forged. Now is the time to build a bright future,” said the Manchester club in the spot they presented on social media with the rendering of United’s new home.
“It will be a stadium that the whole city of Manchester will be proud of,” said former Manchester footballer Gary Neville. “It is more than a stadium, it is about urban regeneration. More than 90,000 permanent jobs will be created,” the club added in the video they released.
The project is estimated to cost more than $2 billion and is expected to transform the area surrounding the stadium into a major shopping mall.
Computer-generated images show a circular stadium, dubbed New Trafford, with a towering roof seen from an aerial perspective. Another image highlights a huge Manchester United crest on the side of the stadium, illuminated by red lights guiding fans towards the entrances.
The new stadium was designed by Foster+Partners, the same architectural firm behind London’s iconic Wembley Stadium. They have also produced a map illustrating what the area could look like after urban regeneration, which would encompass the entire Trafford Park region. The proposals include new housing, commercial areas and improved transport links.
According to the club, at the heart of the project is a modern stadium design, with a gallery and large windows offering views of a park and statues of Manchester United legends.
