The technical director of the Diablos Rojos del Toluca, Renato Paiva, made some harsh statements against the Liga MX’s rule for minors, which requires teams to place young players in matches in order to give them minutes and thus develop them for future participation in the Mexican national team.

He made these statements during the press conference following his team’s 2-0 defeat against Santos Laguna and joins the coach of the Club América Eagles, André Jardine, as other coaches who have raised their voices against this mechanism, considering it negative because it means having to take minutes away from their most important players to give time to the rookies who continue to develop their style of play.

“I’m not going to put players out there just because I have to, the responsibility is for Toluca to win and today they didn’t win,” Paiva began his controversial statements, although he ended by adding that “I’m not against the rule,” which caused some confusion.

“Marcel (Ruiz) didn’t need minutes to play, (Alexis) Vega didn’t need them… the good ones, the ones who work, the ones who are serious, the ones who have a good foundation end up appearing. We have to work with those who aren’t so good, we have to work with them, but at the base, it’s not from today to tomorrow,” he added.

Renato Paiva also decided to send a message to Liga MX and the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) by ensuring that this is his simple opinion and that they should take examples from other leagues in Europe to be able to improve these decisions regarding the development of the tournament.

“If they want to find solutions for Mexican football, that is not the case. That is my opinion. I am not against anyone. Do you know what the limit is for foreigners in the Portuguese league? There is none because they work very well at the grassroots level, because the Federation decided with the clubs to work on an equal path for both with time, patience and structure,” concluded the coach.
