Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris will visit the city of Douglas, Arizona, which borders Sonora in Mexico, on Friday, September 27, as part of her campaign to address the issue of immigration, a key concern for the November 5 elections.
This trip is Kamala Harris’ second to Arizona since she became a presidential candidate in August. According to her campaign, she will also travel to Nevada on Sunday, September 29, in addition to California, the date of which has not yet been confirmed.
In July, Harris pledged to forge a broad bipartisan deal on immigration and said she would reintroduce the border security bill.
Legislation will help stop the flow of fentanyl
During the Sept. 10 debate, the Democrat noted that the measure “put 1,500 more border agents on the border.” She added that the legislation would also help “stop the flow of fentanyl coming into the United States,” Bloomberg reported.
The vice president has said she will draw on her experience as former California attorney general, when she frequently visited the U.S.-Mexico border and prosecuted gangs that trafficked drugs and people.
Trump to eliminate humanitarian parole
For his part, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump warned on Wednesday that he will eliminate humanitarian parole, revoke those granted so far, and eliminate CBP One if he wins the November elections and reaches the White House.
The program, which was initially intended for Venezuelans but later extended to Cubans, Haitians and Nicaraguans, was established in October 2022 and has allowed 530,000 people to enter the United States, allowing them to obtain a work permit for a period of two years.
Trump has built part of his campaign on cracking down on immigration at the southern border, even approving the use of police and the military to carry out mass deportations if elected in November.
Immigration is a key issue in the elections
Harris has worked to make immigration an issue that could help her gain support among her supporters, promising to provide more humane treatment to migrants if she is elected in November and reaches the White House, The Arizona Republic reported.
In June, Joe Biden announced rules that prevent migrants from being granted asylum when US authorities consider the southern border to be saturated. Since then, the number of arrests for crossing the border illegally has declined.
In a Bloomberg/Morning Consult poll conducted in late August, 6 in 10 voters in key swing states said immigration was an important issue in deciding who to support.
A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS finds that 48% support Kamala Harris, while 47% support Donald Trump, a margin that so far leaves no clear leader in the race.
