An Israeli airstrike in a southern suburb of Lebanon’s capital killed the head of Hezbollah’s drone unit on Thursday, both the Islamist movement and the Hebrew State Army reported.
The Iranian-backed Lebanese militia said in a statement that the bombing killed Mohamed Srur, born in 1973 and head of the group’s drone unit.
The Israeli military had previously noted that “fighter jets attacked and eliminated (Srur), the commander of Hezbollah’s air unit, in Beirut.”
Commander to train Houthi rebels
Mohamed Srur studied mathematics and was one of several Hezbollah commanders sent to Yemen to train the Houthi rebels, a group also backed by Iran that controls parts of this country, said a source close to the Lebanese movement.
This was the fourth attack in a week against Hezbollah commanders in the densely populated southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of this important Lebanese political and military movement.
One hundred dead in 24 hours
The Lebanese Ministry of Health said in a statement that two people were killed by this bombing and 15 were injured. He added that the attacks in the last 24 hours left at least 92 dead and 153 injured.
The National News Agency, an official Lebanese media, explained that “three missiles” hit “a residential apartment in a 10-story building.”
Meanwhile, Israel vowed Thursday to continue fighting Hezbollah “until victory” in Lebanon and ignored a call from the United States, the European Union and several Arab countries for a 21-day ceasefire.
Israel attacked 75 Hezbollah targets
The Israeli army reported that its aircraft attacked 75 Hezbollah targets in southern and eastern Lebanon on Thursday and stated in the evening that it was carrying out new bombings against the Islamist formation.
He also reported the launch of dozens of “projectiles” from Lebanon. Hezbollah said it fired about a hundred rockets at the northern Israeli cities of Safed and Haifa.
Early Friday, the Israeli military also reported that its air defense systems intercepted a missile fired from Yemen, a country partially controlled by the Houthis, a rebel group also allied with Iran.
