Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, met in Madrid with Edmundo González Urrutia, Venezuelan opposition leader. The meeting, which lasted less than ten minutes, took place in the framework of a broader meeting with leaders of the Spanish Popular Party. Metsola stressed the need for Europe to increase its support for Venezuela.
Metsola participated for less than ten minutes in a meeting that González held in Madrid with the leader of the Spanish Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez Almeida, and other party leaders. The meeting took place before the closing of the FAES Foundation Forum.
The president avoided making statements to the press after leaving the meeting, which was her first contact with González in person. The Venezuelan opposition leader, for his part, also refrained from making comments, but was received with a standing ovation and several rounds of applause at the event at the FAES Foundation, where the former president of the Spanish Government, José María Aznar, described him as the president-elect of Venezuela.
Metsola asks Europe to do more for Venezuela
In her speech at the closing of the FAES Foundation Forum, Metsola stressed the need for Europe to increase its support for Venezuela: “Europe must do much more in response to the situation in Venezuela,” said the President of the European Parliament.
Metsola also referred to the decision of the European Parliament to recognise González as the legitimate president of Venezuela, stressing that “the European Parliament has been extremely clear about what has happened after the elections in Venezuela.”
The diplomat added that “Europe has to do much, much more about this, and become more involved in its relationship with Latin America.”
