David Benavídez seems not to give up on his goal of getting a fight with Canelo Álvarez. The current interim super middleweight champion has been challenging the Mexican for more than a year, however Canelo seems to have no interest in getting into the ring with him.
Even Álvarez made it clear on more than one occasion that the only scenario in which he would fight Benavídez would be if they guaranteed him a purse of $200 million dollars. Otherwise he stated that “it is not worth it.”
Benavídez, for his part, has searched everywhere for a promoter who is willing to give that $200 million to Canelo. He even called on Sheikh Turki Alalshikh to promote the duel. However, the “Red Flag”, as he is often nicknamed, seems to have a “plan B” with a solution that would make him fight with the man from Guadalajara without needing the $200 million dollars.
Benavídez’s plan was recently revealed in an interview for Mr_Organik. In which he assured what his idea is to be able to fight Canelo in 2025 and thus have the opportunity to strip him of his three super middleweight belts.
“If I get the four titles at 175 pounds it could be the only way that fight happens. I am already in line to fight for the four belts at 175 against the winner of Beterbiev and Bivol,” David began.
And on October 12, Artur Beterbiyev and Dmitry Bivol will face each other in a fight to define the absolute light heavyweight champion. And Benavídez, being the current interim champion of the category after beating Oleksandr Gvozdyk, will have the privilege of facing the next undisputed champion of the weight.
According to Benavídez, if he manages to win the absolute light heavyweight title, he will have four belts in his hands that could interest Canelo. So the Mexican could see with greater interest getting into the ring with the American.
“If I win all four belts it would be a great fight against Canelo. Maybe we could make a catchweight: he could put the 168-pound belts on the line and I could put the 175-pound belts on the line, and that way we could fight and the winner would take it all,” said the “Mexican Monster.”
For now we will have to wait to see how the fight between Bivol and Beterbiev ends. Meanwhile, Benavídez seems to have a fight scheduled for December against Jesse Hart, for which confirmation is not yet known.
