FC Barcelona announced this Friday that it will abide by UEFA’s sanction for the racist behavior of some Barça fans at the Luis II Stadium in Monaco, and promised to reinforce current measures to punish those responsible and prevent these events from being repeated.
UEFA has sanctioned the Catalan club with more than $10,000 in fines and a ban on selling tickets for the next trip to the Champions League after the events that occurred on September 19 in the match on the first day of the top continental competition. between FC Barcelona and Monaco.
The sanction comes after Barça fans behaved badly in the Champions League quarter-final match against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes last April, after which Barça was fined. with 28 thousand dollars from UEFA for making Nazi salutes and racist gestures.
“The charges against Barça are related to racism and/or other discriminatory conduct, in accordance with art. 14(2) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations,” European football’s governing body said in a statement on Friday.
“The Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Committee (CEDB) has decided to order the execution of the suspended disciplinary measure imposed by the UEFA Appeal Committee in its decision of April 17, 2024 for the racist behavior of its fans, i.e. , prohibit FC Barcelona from selling tickets to its visiting fans for the next UEFA competition match in accordance with article 26 (3) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations.
“And also fine FC Barcelona with 10 thousand euros and prohibit FC Barcelona from selling tickets to its visiting fans for one more UEFA competition match due to the racist behavior of its fans.
“This prohibition on selling tickets to visiting fans is suspended for a trial period of one year, counting from the date of this decision.”
Barcelona reported this Friday that it will “accept and apply” this sanction in the match on the fourth day of the Champions League at the Red Star Belgrade field, on November 6, and confirmed that it will return the entry fee to everyone. the fans who had already bought it.
On the other hand, the club stressed that “it rejects any type of apology for violence and, as stated in articles 3 and 4 of its statutes, it will ensure the protection and promotion of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”
Likewise, FC Barcelona admitted the existence of “behavior” of the entertainment groups and fans that are leading to “repeated sanctions, both at the national and international level.”
Given this situation, the club announced that “it will reinforce current measures and undertake additional actions that are appropriate to prevent these events from being repeated in the future, as well as to sanction those responsible.”
