The Swiss junior cyclist Muriel Furrer, just 18 years old, died this Friday after failing to recover from the serious consequences of a head injury she suffered in a fall during the road event of the Zurich 2024 Cycling and Paracycling World Championships.
The International Cycling Union (UCI) confirmed the unfortunate death of Furrer, which occurred after his fall during the junior category race, which took place on Thursday. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was evacuated by helicopter to a hospital where she was admitted in critical condition, which generated concern among her colleagues and followers. “Muriel Furrer unfortunately passed away today at the University Hospital of Zurich,” the international organization announced, underlining the seriousness of the incident.
The Swiss Cycling Federation also spoke out about the tragic event through its website, stating that “with Muriel Furrer, the international cycling community has lost an athlete who still had her future ahead of her.”
Furrer suffered the fall in a wooded section of the course during the junior women’s road competition on Thursday.
“The UCI and the Organizing Committee of the UCI Cycling and Road World Championships express their deepest condolences to Muriel Furrer’s family, her friends and her Swiss Cycling association. The family asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time,” concludes the official statement, which highlights the need for support for Furrer’s family in this time of pain.
The death of Muriel Furrer not only leaves a void in the cycling community, but also raises a call to improve safety measures for athletes in competitions.
