The vice president of the United States and presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, spoke this Saturday about the death of Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike.
He described the event as a step towards justice for the victims of the Shiite organization and described Nasrallah as “a terrorist responsible” for murders of Americans.
“For decades, Nasrallah led Hezbollah, destabilizing the Middle East and causing the deaths of countless civilians in Lebanon, Israel, Syria and other countries. Today, the victims of Hezbollah have obtained a measure of justice,” Harris said in a statement.
The attack, carried out on the order of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is seen as a significant escalation in the conflict between Israel and the Iranian-backed Lebanese militia.
Despite this escalation, Kamala Harris emphasized the need to seek diplomatic solutions to avoid a broader regional war.
“President Joe Biden and I are committed to preventing this conflict from escalating into a regional war. “We have worked on diplomatic initiatives along the border between Israel and Lebanon to guarantee the security of people on both sides,” the Democratic candidate stressed.
Harris, who stressed that diplomacy must be the way forward, also reaffirmed the United States’ “unwavering commitment” to Israel’s security and its right to defend itself against threats from Iran and its allies, including Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis.
These statements come as the United States attempts to mediate a ceasefire in Gaza with Hamas and reduce tensions in Lebanon, where Israeli bombing and missile attacks continue to escalate the conflict.
For his part, President Biden contextualized Nasrallah’s death in the midst of the conflict that began after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
“Nasrallah decided to join Hamas and open a ‘northern front’ against Israel, which led to his fatal outcome,” Biden declared. He highlighted Washington’s support for Israel in this regional crisis.
