This Sunday at the Metropolitan Stadium, Atlético de Madrid will host Real Madrid for matchday 8 of LaLiga de España. For this match, a large sector of Colchoneros fans campaigned to go to the stadium with masks.
This peculiar campaign aims to ensure that local fans can cover their mouths so they can insult Vinícius Jr. during the match and cannot be singled out and accused of racist insults. An issue that is currently very delicate in Spanish football and could even be punished with prison.
Given this campaign, Atlético de Madrid fans from LaLiga want to prevent this from going any further. Therefore, they issued a statement in which they threatened to arrest the precursors of this movement for “promoting hatred and racism.”
“LaLiga informs that it will proceed to formally denounce and request the immediate arrest of the instigators of a hate campaign that seeks to promote racist and humiliating acts in the next match between Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid, scheduled for November 29, 2024 at 9:00 p.m. The aforementioned campaign constitutes a crime of incitement to hatred, clearly defined in the Penal Code,” part of the statement states.
Furthermore, LaLiga’s statement is based on an article of the Spanish Penal Code to condemn this campaign started by Atlético de Madrid fans.
“LaLiga strongly condemns these actions that directly or indirectly encourage, promote and incite hatred against a specific person, in this case the player Vinícius Jr, due to his race, with the concurrence, in addition, of the aggravating circumstances of sections 3 and 4 of art 510 of the Penal Code, “when the facts are suitable to alter public peace.”
“LaLiga will not tolerate this type of behavior under any circumstances. These acts not only damage the image of the sport and our country, but also represent a direct threat to the integrity and well-being of all fans,” the statement continues.
For now, we will have to wait for the actions that the Altético de Madrid fans will take and if they will go to the stadium with masks, as indicated by the campaign, in turn we will also wait for the actions that the directors of the Spanish competition could take.
