The technical director of Inter Miami, Gerardo “Tata” Martino, spoke this Saturday about the team’s chances of winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield after the 1-1 draw they achieved at home against Charlotte FC thanks to a great goal from their star Lionel Messi .
Martino believes that it is important to win the Supporters’ Shield, to fulfill a set goal, but that they remain focused on achieving the title of MLS champion.
“We play against a great team, which together with Galaxy are the only ones that can catch us in the Supporters’ Shield, and what interests us most is this. The Supporters’ Shield interests us so we can play the playoff games at home,” said Martino.
“We look forward to being the best team in the regular phase, but we would all feel very empty if we don’t fight for the championship. We have a very important game, but the others will be too,” he added.
Martino also acknowledged that there was frustration in the locker room for stringing together three consecutive draws. At the same time, he stressed that his team has achieved a winning mentality.
“Now Inter Miami is a team that has reversed its image, now we are a team that usually wins. We know this, and we are working to reverse this image of the team. Trying to work again with different schemes, as a result of players who go to the national team, who are injured, who return is complicated,” he stated.
At the moment, Inter Miami continues to lead the MLS Eastern Conference with 68 points in 34 games played.
