In the Madrid derby played at the Cívitas Metropolitano, the atmosphere remained relatively calm until Real Madrid managed to open the scoring thanks to a goal from Brazilian Éder Militao.
However, after this goal, tension broke out in the stands, particularly in the northern back, where a group of Atlético de Madrid fans began throwing objects at Real Madrid goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois. This behavior led the referee, Mateo Busquets Ferrer, to suspend the match for ten minutes.
The Atlético de Madrid fans focused their frustration on Courtois, who at the time defended the colors of the red and white team.
The Belgian goalkeeper handed the referee one of the objects that fell in his area after Real Madrid’s goal, which intensified the situation. Courtois not only picked up one object, but also removed several more, including some lighters that were thrown from the stands.
The referee, making his debut in the Madrid derby, did not take long to act after Courtois handed over the objects. Seeing the persistence of the incidents, Busquets Ferrer headed towards the sideline and made the decision to order the players of both teams to leave the field of play, stopping the match. This incident occurred in the 69th minute, when Real Madrid had a 1-0 lead over Atlético de Madrid.
The break in the game was intended to calm the fans’ spirits, and lasted approximately ten minutes. During this time, some Atlético de Madrid players attempted to mediate with fans to stop the throwing of objects.
Captain Koke Resurrección was the first to approach the north end to ask the fans for calm, and he was followed by José María Giménez and coach Diego Simeone, who also tried to calm the situation.
With the match restarted, Atlético pressed during the final minutes and that siege achieved its goal in the 95th minute, thanks to Argentine Angel Correa, who achieved the equalizer at the end of the match.
