The number of people killed by floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain over the weekend in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu and other parts of the country reached 193, as recovery and rescue work intensified on Monday.
Large areas of the east and center have been flooded by heavy rains since last Friday, as have entire neighborhoods of the capital. The rivers overflowed and swept away vehicles. More than 40 people are missing and 96 people were injured across the Himalayan country, according to the Home Ministry.
Thousands of people in rescue efforts
More than 3,000 people are participating in the rescue efforts, with the help of helicopters and boats. The work has allowed more than 3,000 victims to be rescued, the entity said.
The Kathmandu Valley recorded 240 millimeters of rain in 24 hours between Friday and Saturday, the Nepalese meteorological agency told the newspaper. Kathmandu Postwhich indicates that they are the most important rainfall in the capital since at least 1970.
Landslide killed dozens of people
A landslide killed three dozen people on a blocked road about 16 kilometers from Kathmandu. The landslide buried at least three buses and other vehicles in which people were sleeping because the road was blocked.
The hydrology and meteorology department stated that stations in 14 districts measured record rainfall in the 24 hours before Saturday morning, according to preliminary data.
Help for people who lost their homes
The Minister of the Interior announced that temporary shelters will be built for people who lost their homes and that monetary aid will be available for the families of the deceased and for people who were injured by the floods and landslides.
The monsoons, which occur from June to September, always cause deaths and damage throughout Southeast Asia, but the number of floods and landslides has increased in recent years.
