The first lady of the United States, Jill Biden, arrived in Mexico City on Monday afternoon to attend the inauguration of the new Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, on Tuesday.
Representing President Joe Biden, the first lady will attend various diplomatic events during her stay, with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations between both countries.
Biden’s landing at the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) occurred around 1:30 p.m. local time, being received by the US ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, and a delegation led by Juan Ramón de la Fuente, next secretary of Foreign Relations of Mexico.
Jill Biden’s agenda in Mexico
After her arrival, Jill Biden participated in a reception organized by the US Embassy, where she offered a speech in which she highlighted the relevance of the bilateral relationship. Later, he attended a dinner at the Mexico City Museum along with Sheinbaum and other international leaders.
“There is something special in the air tonight. I felt it as soon as I landed: a spark of emotion when I saw the inauguration of the first female president of Mexico,” said the first lady at the Embassy reception.
And he added: “I know that under Dr. Sheinbaum’s presidency we will continue to build a more prosperous, secure and democratic region, and we will take the next steps in our alliance between the United States and Mexico.”
On Tuesday, the first lady will be present at Sheinbaum’s inauguration ceremony, which will take place in the San Lázaro Congress, in an event that will mark history as it will be the first time that a woman assumes the presidency of Mexico. .
In this context, Jill Biden also plans to have lunch with the outgoing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to discuss issues of mutual interest.
Biden’s agenda will culminate on Wednesday morning, when he returns to the United States after participating in the official inauguration events.
A diverse delegation
In addition to the first lady, the US delegation includes prominent officials such as Xavier Becerra, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, and Liz Sherwood-Randall, National Security Advisor.
Also present are political figures such as Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy and California Congresswoman Nanette Barragán, among others.
The Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, canceled his attendance due to the damage caused by Hurricane Helene in the United States.
