The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation that led them to find human bones buried in the yard of a home in Wheatfield. The remains were taken to the medical examiner for analysis and identification, while detectives discovered a suspect who had confessed to having killed two children who were not registered at birth.
Through a statement, the Jasper County Sheriff shared that on September 20 they received reports about a person who had confessed to killing two children and burning their remains. Based on that statement, the authorities began an investigation that led them to find the human remains.
Police located suspect
“An individual had allegedly confessed to acquaintances about killing two of his undocumented children and burning their bodies in a bonfire in the backyard of his residence in Wheatfield, Indiana,” the sheriff’s office shared.
After making several inquiries, they located the suspect who was staying in Newton County. The man denied the statements, but his mobile devices had important information.
“Jasper County sheriff’s detectives, along with personnel from the Jasper County Coroner’s Office, Indiana State Police, Wheatfield Police Department and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, conducted a search of the property in Wheatfiel with the help of two cadaver dogs,” the authorities added.
The skeletal remains are from two children who were born at home
After a search, they located the bones that were taken to the medical examiner. WTHR 13 News reported that the sheriff confirmed the children were “undocumented, in a situation that appeared to have been a home birth.”
“That means the children were never registered by the local government with a birth certificate, Social Security number, etc.,” the sheriff detailed.
Another child in the suspect’s care, whose identity was not released by authorities, was taken into protective custody by the Indiana Department of Child Services.
Authorities ask that anyone with information that could assist police in their investigation of the case can contact Jasper County Sheriff’s Office detectives at 219-866-7334.
