The president of the United States, Joe Biden, spoke this Friday with the Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum, whom he congratulated on her recent inauguration.
Biden highlighted the importance of maintaining a “solid and collaborative alliance” between both countries.
“Today I spoke with President Sheinbaum to congratulate her on her historic inauguration as the first woman to serve as president of Mexico,” Biden commented through a message on the social network X.
The US president added: “I look forward to continuing the solid and collaborative alliance that will promote prosperity and security in both countries.”
For her part, Claudia Sheinbaum also shared details and mentioned that she “received a call” from the American president. During the conversation, they addressed “bilateral cooperation in economic, cultural and commercial matters” between both countries.
Sheinbaum took office on October 1 and became the first woman to lead Mexico. A member of the progressive Morena party, the Mexican president shares affiliation with outgoing president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The former head of government of Mexico City won the presidential elections with 59.76% of the votes, reflecting strong popular support.
Claudia Sheinbaum previously received congratulations from US Vice President Kamala Harris, who highlighted her historic inauguration.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by first lady Jill Biden, who led the US delegation. Upon arriving in Mexico, she expressed that she perceived the “enthusiasm” for the arrival of a woman in power for the first time in the country.
The United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with the Mexican government on a comprehensive agenda towards the year 2030.
“We will continue to collaborate. “I look to the future with renewed hope for what we have achieved together as partners and for what we can achieve through dialogue and cooperation for the security, prosperity and development of our nations,” the diplomat said in a statement.
Salazar emphasized the importance of the relationship between the United States and Mexico being based on “dialogue and understanding,” and assured that shared democratic values will serve to provide certainty and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
“We are very optimistic about this new chapter in our bilateral relationship to deepen our cooperation,” he said.
