The New York Mets earned their place in the National League Division Series after eliminating the Milwaukee Brewers in the Wild Card Series. Now the Queens team will face the Philadelphia Phillies in the best of five games to get a place in the Championship Series.
But beyond this classification for the Mets it seems that history and coincidences are in their favor this season. Well, the New York franchise could even win the World Series if it continues a series streak that dates back to 1981.
The franchise named “Brewers” and based in Milwaukee was born in 1970 and in the 1981 season a curious streak was born. And since then, every team that eliminated the Brewers in the playoffs has managed to reach at least the World Series.
It all started when in the 1981 season the Brewers were eliminated by the New York Yankees in the Division Series 3-2 in the series. That season the Yankees ended up playing in the World Series against the Dodgers, although they fell 4-2 in the series.
The following year, Wisconsin won its first and only pennant, while they still belonged to the American League East. They also ended up reaching the World Series, which they lost, against the St. Louis Cardinals.
It was not until 2008 when the Brewers returned to play in the playoffs, this time via the Wild Card route. The Philadelphia Phillies eliminated the Brewers in four games and ultimately finished as World Series champions.
In 2011 the Brewers won their first pennant in the National League Central Division with 96 wins and the second best record of the season. However, it was not enough for them, because in the Championship Series the Cardinals eliminated them and finished as champions.
In 2018 he would begin a more notable streak of consecutive seasons. Well, the Dodgers reached the World Series at the expense of the Brewers, in 2019, 2020 and 2021; The Washington Nationals, Dodgers and Atlanta Braves always left the Brewers in the way of winning the championship. While in 2023 the Arizona Diamondbacks eliminated them in the Wild Card Series and ended up reaching the World Series.
This streak could be extended now that the Mets left the Brewers on the road in the Wild Card Series. Although to achieve this they must first eliminate the Phillies in the Division Series and the winner in the series between the Dodgers and the Padres.
