Dani Carvajal, right back for Real Madrid and the Spanish national team, left the Santiago Bernabéu pitch on a stretcher in the final moments of the match that his team beat Villarreal (2-0), in tears and with clear symptoms of pain after an action in which everything indicates that he could suffer a serious injury to his right knee.
An attempted clearance between the legs of a rival, his teammate Yeremy Pino, who knows well what the full-back felt, ended with a kick in the air and his right knee gave way. The worst possible end to the game after a football improvement by Ancelotti’s team.
His teammates quickly called the medical services, alerted by the possible seriousness of the injury, and Carvajal left the field in added time of the second half on a stretcher, crying and using his shirt to cover his face.
As soon as the match ended, Fede Valverde, one of the scorers of the duel, had words for his teammate, although he appealed to the hope that it was something not so serious: “A shame. In the end the result is the least important. Carva’s health is what matters… We will see what he says in the locker room.”
Albiol, from Villarreal, also gave his point of view: “It looks bad to see Dani leaving crying. Let’s hope it is as little as possible because we know how important it is for Real Madrid and Spanish football. “We hope it is as less serious as possible.”
Several minutes after the end of the duel, Ancelotti appeared in the press room and gave his first look at the injury, which he described as “quite serious”: “It seems like a pretty serious knee injury. They have to evaluate it in the next few hours, the locker room is sad, worried, because something has happened that I hope never happens. It happens many times on the calendar, unfortunately it has happened to a very important player for us. He is a fundamental player for us, due to his experience, personality, professionalism… I have spoken with him a little, he is sad, disappointed, but there is not much to do. Let’s see what the doctors say and then think about recovering him. The doctor has not told me what knee injury it is, he has to do tests, but it is a knee injury. “It doesn’t change much, I hope it’s as minor as possible.”
It was not the only injury of the night, although Vinicius’s was much milder: the Brazilian left with pain in his right shoulder. “He is blocked, he has had a problem in his cervical spine, he is completely blocked, hurt. They are going to do tests on him in the next few hours,” Ancelotti commented in the press room.
