Washington – Former basketball player Magic Johnson appealed this Friday to African-American men to vote for the Democratic candidate for the White House, Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Kamala’s opponent (former President Donald Trump) promised a lot of things to the black community last time, things he didn’t deliver. We need to make sure black men understand that,” Johnson said during a Harris rally in Flint, Michigan.

“That’s why I’m here: to make sure black men understand the importance of getting out to vote and then voting for the next president of the United States,” he added.

Although the African-American community has traditionally supported Democrats overwhelmingly, some polls indicate that Trump is managing to attract some of the male vote.

“We have to call people. We have to knock on doors. Before and after going to church, not during, but before and after,” said the winner of five NBA rings with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Originally from Michigan, Johnson is politically active and supported both the current president, Joe Biden, and former president Barack Obama (2009-2017) in the previous cycles.

Regarding Harris, Johnson assured that she is an “intelligent, strong and passionate” candidate.

“No one is going to work harder than her. She is committed to you, to the people of the United States, the people of Michigan, she is committed to you. “She will be a president for everyone,” Johnson said.

In addition, the former basketball player highlighted that 2024 “is the year of women.”

“We just saw what Mexico did when it elected (Claudia Sheinbaum) its first female president. You know where I’m going with this. “Let’s make sure that in the United States we elect our first female president: Kamala Harris,” he added.

With 32 days to go before the November 5 elections, the Harris campaign is pressing the accelerator in the handful of states that, like Michigan, are called to decide the elections.

Before the Flint rally, the vice president participated in another campaign event with workers and union members in Detroit and was also scheduled to meet with leaders of Michigan’s important Arab community, disenchanted with their government for its support for the war in Gaza.
