Without a doubt one of the best boxers today is Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez. The Mexican is the current super middleweight world champion, holding three of the four belts in the category and has a winning record of 62-2-2.

However, the man from Guadalajara has been the subject of criticism on several occasions. Especially for not accepting the fights of his mandatory challengers, which has generated doubt among several boxing figures whether Álvarez deserves to be considered among the best in history.

Given these criticisms and accusations, Canelo seems to have a defender. And recently the legendary Julio César Chávez defended his compatriot and assured that he is one of the best in world boxing.

“It’s envy. Canelo has achieved what he has through discipline, work and has his virtues and his defects. “He is a fighter who has earned what he has,” Chavez commented in a recent interview for the newspaper Brand.

Julio César Chávez was a boxing legend and considered the best Mexican boxer in history. And the “Great Mexican Champion”, as he is often nicknamed, fought a total of 115 fights, of which 87 were won by knockout.

For his part, Canelo has a total of 66 fights and has only lost two in his entire career. This has caused him to be compared to the legacy of Chávez as the greatest figures of Mexican boxing. Given this comparison, Julius Caesar himself gave his opinion on the matter.

“We had a time when Mexico was divided, there are those who want him to lose, many people don’t want him, but there are people who love him, and that makes him earn more money, I wish that in my time I would have had that chance.” all that,” Chávez concluded.
