Column by Dr. Nancy Alvarez: What is happening in the US? Why don't people talk?

What is happening in the United States? Why so silence? Why don’t people talk? Why are we censoring ourselves? Here it is very difficult for someone to answer clearly what they think about politics or economics. Why is everyone silent and afraid of what may come after the elections?

I see that, above all, journalists do not comment on what they have to talk about. In other words, we are going to a strong recession, and more. Many people do not recognize that everyone has the right to vote for whoever they want and that we have to want or do what is best, as we believe, for the country.

In the long run, we are the only ones who can make those decisions freely. No one can tell me who to vote for, or tell me to shut up. Many people consider Latin American countries to be “banana” countries, but if in my native country, the Dominican Republic, there had been an attack against a presidential candidate twice, in a very short time, there would be a huge mess. And, in the US, nothing has really been done.

You have to investigate what is happening and what is behind it. We increasingly look like a third world country. We are supposedly the ones who represent democracy in the world, although I believe this less and less every day.

Nobody says publicly that the country is totally divided between extremes. People don’t even dare to say that they are going to vote for Trump, because they are on top of them. And they also do the same with the one who says he will vote for Harris.

I think the Democratic Party has left a country bankrupt and in debt. People no longer have enough money to pay for food. There is a lot of fear about what is going to happen, and everyone is waiting for election day.

I am not a member of any party, I always clarify that. I’m not defending Trump, but I can’t defend Biden either. This has been a disaster. Anyone who doesn’t want to say it, shouldn’t say it, but I feel like I have to speak clearly. You have to respect. People have the right to vote for whoever they want. Where did democracy go? What is happening in this country? God catch us confessed. I don’t like what it smells like.
