Ecuador faces an electrical crisis, which will have some new developments starting next week: its inhabitants will face power cuts that will last two to four hours.

The Ministry of Energy shared the information in an official statement. In the announcement, he indicated that the blackouts will be up to four hours a day in the period from 12:00 in the morning to 08:00 in the morning; and up to two in the range from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., between Monday and Thursday.

The nine companies that distribute electricity in the country will participate in the cuts, including the state-owned CNEL, which supplies coastal areas, including the port city of Guayaquil, the most populated in the country, reported the EFE news agency.

The Quito Electric Company, Emelnorte, Elepcosa, the Ambato Central North Regional Electric Company, the Riobamba Electric Company, Centrosur, the Southern Regional Company and the Azogues Electric Company are also part of this program.

Why is there an electricity crisis in Ecuador?

In the country they have decided to apply this plan with shorter hours than those they established days ago, in which they could have cuts of up to eight hours.

The main reason behind this rationing is due to the reduction in energy generation in the country’s most important hydroelectric plants, affected by the drought.

This situation has improved a little after the rains that have fallen in the country and have helped the hydroelectric plants. However, the problem is not completely controlled and that is why the cuts continue, but for a shorter duration.

The government of President Daniel Noboa indicated that in these last two weeks the country has faced the worst drought in 60 years, a factor that has seriously affected the electricity issue.

Added to this are the complaints of the president, who recognized that “years of neglect and corruption in the contracting of works in the electrical sector” had caused problems in the energy supply on a national scale.
