Early this Sunday, October 6, a fatal accident occurred on a highway in Clermont County, where five people died and one is in critical condition in a hospital, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported.

The accident occurred around 1:45 a.m. on State Route 28 at Edenton Pleasant Plain Road in Goshen Township.

The State Highway Patrol shared that a Chrysler 300, which was heading northeast on Route 28, collided with a Subaru Legacy, which was trying to cross the highway, The Associated Press reported.

One of the cars tried to cross the road

Troopers said the two vehicles at the time of the collision left the road and ended up in a ditch and an embankment. The Chrysler 300 was driven by Mathew Penny, and the Subaru Legacy was driven by Dustin McDole, authorities added.

The collision between both cars claimed the lives of five people.

  • Mathew Penny, 25, of Cincinnati.
  • Dustin McDole, 43, of Goshen.
  • Chloe Love, 19, of Loveland (was riding in Penny’s car).
  • Dezmen Jernigan, 18, of Goshen, (was riding in Penny’s car).
  • Andrea Iery, 42, of Pleasant Plain (was traveling in McDole’s car).

Another victim, an 18-year-old man from Milford, was in Penny’s car. The young man was taken to UC Medical Center with “life-threatening injuries,” the Highway Patrol argued, 10TV shared.

The Clermont County Coroner’s Office pronounced all victims dead at the scene of the crash. Highway Patrol officers commented that McDole and Andrea were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, but did not make it clear if the other occupants were wearing them.

Using a seat belt in the car

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) constantly publishes about mandatory seat belt use. On many occasions they do it through advertisements where the message is clear; A seat belt can save your life, and not wearing it is illegal.

The United States Department of Transportation shared a statistic reflecting that 51% of passenger vehicle occupants who died in 2020 were not restrained, they did not have a seat belt while traveling in a vehicle.
