The trend in the New York Mets’ recent games of scoring in the last innings almost sealed an epic comeback this Sunday, but in the end they ended up falling thanks to a golden hit by Nicholas Castellanos, with which the Philadelphia Phillies won 7-6 in the second game of the American League Division Series.
The Mets against all odds managed two new runs in the ninth inning after Mark Vientos hit the ball towards the stands when the game was 6-4 on the scoreboard.
With a hit that Francisco Lindor had scored minutes before, Vientos’ home run made it 6-6 in the top of the ninth inning, with the Puerto Rican scoring.
Vientos had already been key in the back turns when in the third inning he had also hit the ball in the street to put the Mets up 1-0.
The third baseman finished the 4-3 clash with two home runs, a double and drove in four of the Big Apple’s six runs.
However, Vientos’ effort was not enough because first the Puerto Rican closer spoiled the New Yorkers’ lead in the 8th, allowing a double by Bryson Stott that served to put the game at 6-4.
Later, in the bottom of the ninth inning, Tylor Megill walked two and this was enough for Castellanos to drive in Trea Turner to finally tie the series, before moving to the home of the Mets at Citi Field in New York .
In this way, the Mets break their streak of victories and it will be the task of manager Carlos Mendoza to rearrange the team to seek their first presence in the World Series since 2015, the date in which they fell to the Kansas City Royals.
