The Salt Lake City Police Department reported the arrest of a man who had barricaded himself in the home of his ex-partner, who had to jump from the balcony of his house to save his life. Officers had to turn to the SWAT team to take the suspect into custody.
The Salt Lake City Police Department’s SWAT team, patrol officers and crisis negotiators worked together to achieve the safe arrest of a man who barricaded himself inside an apartment unit, authorities said in a statement.
The suspect was identified as Michael Dayley, 40, who had been in a relationship with the victim, whose identity was not shared by police.
The victim jumped from a balcony to save his life
The Police Department received an emergency call about a man breaking into an apartment at 1925 West North Temple Street. When the officers arrived, they found a woman who was being deprived of her liberty inside her own home at the hands of the suspect.
Dayley arrived at the woman’s apartment and stole her phone. He also did not allow her to leave, so she had to jump from a balcony to escape and save her life. While the man barricaded himself.
Salt Lake City police officers attempted to contact Dayley several times, but he refused to come out, while they heard noises inside the apartment indicating the suspect moved several pieces of furniture in front of the door, SLCPD said in the statement.
The commander, who was in charge of the incident, upon seeing that they did not have a favorable response, requested the assistance of the SLCPD SWAT team and crisis negotiators. These teams are highly trained to provide additional resources to patrol officers.
The ex-couple accused of several crimes
After looking for a way for the suspect to leave the apartment, after several hours he left the apartment and officers were able to safely take Dayley into custody.
The man was taken to the Salt Lake County Metropolitan Jail, where he will be charged with robbery, false imprisonment, violation of a protective order, assault and interference with a police officer.
Authorities said no one was injured in this incident, which they called domestic violence.
During the investigation, officers discovered that Michael Dayley had an active arrest warrant for a felony, which was not specified by police.
