Costco is well known as a popular shopping store for its good wholesale deals on everything from wool slippers to rotisserie chickens.
However, one of the practices that characterize the store is the check of tickets at the time of leaving, something not seen in many other grocery stores.
Upon leaving, one or more employees stand at the exit door armed with permanent markers, reviewing each receipt and comparing it to the items in the customer’s cart.
This measure seeks to ensure that all customers have paid correctly for their purchases, thus helping to control inventory and ensuring that incorrect charges do not occur.
If any discrepancy is found, the employee will be responsible for resolving it.
If everything is in order, a line is drawn through the receipt.
Some customers think this marking is to prevent others from reusing old receipts and stealing, although Costco has not confirmed this theory.
In addition to this verification, Costco has other unique procedures.
At the entrance, one or two employees check the membership cards of customers, who must also show them at the register to validate their identity.
In order to shop at Costco, you must purchase an annual membership that costs from $65 for the Gold Star membership to $130 for the Executive membership.
This membership system helps cover Costco’s operating costs and allows it to offer low prices.
However, Costco also has the authority to revoke memberships if they are abused.
A distinctive aspect of Costco is its famous food court, where prices are remarkably low, such as the famous hot dog and soda for $1.50, a price that has remained the same since 1985.
This competitive pricing strategy aims to attract and retain customers, who in turn spend on other profitable products in the store.
