One year after the multiple attack by Hamas that left 1,200 dead in Israeli territory and 251 kidnapped, the Chief of the Army Staff, Herzi Halevi, acknowledged this Sunday that the troops were not capable of protecting citizens and that on this date They must recognize their “failures” and learn from them.
“One year has passed since October 7, the day we failed in our mission to protect the citizens of the State of Israel,” Halevi said in a letter to soldiers and commanders.
“Now we are in the Ten Days of Repentance. “October 7 is not only a day of remembrance, but also a call for deep introspection, a recognition of our failures and a commitment to learn from them,” he added.
In the letter, the lieutenant general also reiterated that Israel has “defeated” the military wing of the Islamist group Hamas in Gaza, but that they still have to completely eliminate its ability to act, and added that it has “dealt a hard blow to Hezbollah” in Lebanon, about which he said that he no longer had any of his senior commanders left.
“We are taking an offensive, tactical and proactive approach on all fronts, adapting our defensive strategies on all borders and understanding that the Israel Defense Forces must be a larger Army capable of taking good care of its people,” he said.
His words come on the eve of Israel commemorating all victims of the Hamas attack, beginning the day with protests outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Jerusalem residence.
A ceremony is also planned to take place in the Reim forest, home of the Nova music festival, where at 6:29 in the morning, the moment the attack began, a siren will sound.
