The speed of Hurricane Milton has been increasing, reaching category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale in a few hours, while several counties in Florida have already declared a state of emergency awaiting its arrival in the southeastern state.
The information was released by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in its latest update. He also specified that it has maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour (mph).
Additionally, the agency issued storm surge warnings and hurricane conditions for a large area of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Mexican authorities are on high alert and have begun to prepare emergency measures to protect the population.
Similarly, the NHC noted that there is an “increasing risk” of storm surge and destructive winds on the west coast of Florida, where a total of 51 counties have already declared a state of emergency.
These adverse conditions are expected to begin affecting the Florida Peninsula starting Tuesday night or early Wednesday. Residents along the west-central Florida coast have been warned to closely follow evacuation orders and recommendations from local authorities.
