Boxer Ryan Garcia can rest easy after the vandalism case was dismissed Tuesday for the incident that occurred in June at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills.
García faced a misdemeanor charge of causing damage estimated at $15,000 to the property.
“As we said in July, we expected a favorable resolution of this matter and always viewed it from the perspective of a civil case,” said Garcia’s attorney, Michael A. Goldstein.
And he revealed: “This incident occurred one day after Mr. García learned of his mother’s significant health problems and was under a tremendous amount of stress.”
“It destroyed property that was finally paid for. We appreciate the professionalism of the Beverly Hills Police Department, the Waldorf Astoria, and the court in granting our motion to dismiss the charges. Mr. García continues to work on his own health as he prepares to return to the ring,” Goldstein noted.
Devin Haney sues Ryan Garcia
Devin Haney has filed a lawsuit against Ryan García for assault, fraud and breach of contract, after their controversial fight on April 20 at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn.
Haney accuses García of having used ostarine, a performance-enhancing drug, and claims that if he had known about this doping, he would not have accepted the fight.
Although Garcia won the fight after knocking down Haney several times, the result was annulled when anti-doping tests detected the banned substance in his system.
This has led Haney to demand compensation for physical injuries, damage to his reputation and emotional distress, in addition to involving Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar de la Hoya’s company, in the lawsuit for breach of contract.
Haney, 25, believes the terms of the agreement were violated and that the integrity of the sport was compromised by doping. The legal battle promises to be intense, as the allegations of fraud and the request for compensation could have major repercussions on the careers of both boxers and the credibility of the promotions involved.
With this case in court, the boxing world will be watching the outcome, which could affect the future opportunities of both Haney and García in the ring.
