Historic England goalscorer Wayne Rooney has been charged with misconduct by the English Football Association (FA) for his behavior before and after he was shown a red card during Plymouth Argyle’s victory over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
Rooney, 38, was sent off after throwing a bottle into the stands when his frustration boiled over after Blackburn’s equalizer.
A statement shared by the FA said: “The coach’s conduct in the 87th minute was allegedly inappropriate and/or abusive and/or insulting towards a match official.”
“It is also alleged that his conduct after being expelled was improper and/or violent. It is also alleged that upon returning to the field of play after being sent off, his behavior was inappropriate.”
Rooney has until October 15 to respond to the charges. During his illustrious career as a footballer he was sent off eight times, to which have now been added those as a coach.
The former Manchester United and England star’s players coped with the situation, and responded to the consequences by scoring the winning goal in the 97th minute through Morgan Whittaker.
Rooney was unable to speak to the media after the match due to his sending off, but his assistant Pete Shuttleworth intervened.
“We’ve all seen him play for many years and we know that passion is what drives him, and he’s been brilliant here,” Shuttleworth said.
“I’ve seen it like this: he still has that passion on the touchline. He likes to be calm and calculate sometimes, and watch the game, and that is his management style. You’re never going to take that away from him. [la pasión] to Wayne.”
Plymouth have won three home games in a row, which puts them 14th in the Championship table.
