On the occasion of Hispanic Heritage Month this Friday, October 11, the 18th edition of the Hispanic/Latino Book Fair in Queens opens, dedicated to the Salvadoran writer Juana M. Ramos.
As is tradition, the event is dedicated to a member of the community who through her work has opened doors for Hispanics in the United States and on this occasion the winner is the writer Ramos who has had an outstanding career as a Spanish teacher and literature at York College-CUNY. She is a poet, researcher, essayist and cultural activist. He has published six collections of poems, a book of stories and a book of essays. As co-author, he has published a book of testimonies and one of poetic prose.
In 2021, Ramos received the Feliks Gross Award, awarded by the Public University of the City of New York (CUNY), in recognition of her extraordinary work as a professor and researcher in the field of Humanities.
In addition, she was recognized by the Chifurnia Foundation as Poet of the Year 2023 in El Salvador for her contribution to Salvadoran literature from teaching, research and cultural management. During the fair she will present her bilingual (English and Spanish) collection of poems Clementina/Clementine, published by The Hispanic/Latino Cultural Center of New York.
The Book Fair is the main activity of the Hispanic/Latino Cultural Center of NY INC., a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting culture.
The opening program includes an artistic presentation and participation and a talk by the honored writer, Dr. Juana M. Ramos. The praised person will speak on “The author and his writing experience” and will be presented by Dr. Juan Tineo.
“The Hispanic/Latino Book Fair in Queens, New York is an activity eagerly awaited by members of our community who love cultural diversity, literature and the arts. In addition, it offers a free platform for both writers and community members to share in the best way possible in a healthy and growing environment. Living with other cultures enriches us. Since 2007, more than 40 writers participate every year,” said Fausto Rodríguez, president of The Hispanic/latino Cultural Center of NY, in a statement.
During Saturday the 12th and Sunday the 13th the program will continue with reading of poetic and narrative texts, book presentations, theatrical performances, presentations, children’s and/or youth activities, and much more.
