A new volcanic eruption was detected on the island of Tonga, an Australian monitoring station reported Monday, just two days after the major eruption that caused a tsunami in the Pacific Ocean.

According to the alert from the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center, the last eruption was detected at 22H10 GMT this Sunday 10 January 2022.

For its part, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated that large waves were detected and that “they could be from another explosion of the Tonga volcano”, according to several media outlets.

In images released this Monday through social networks, the damage caused by the volcanic eruption on the island of Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai is evident.
