The Los Angeles Police Department reported on Sunday the death of a septuagenarian woman who was violently attacked while waiting for a bus in the city center.

The authorities responded on Thursday to an incident at 5: 15 am for an assault at a bus stop, where Sandra Shells, of 70 years old, received a blow to the head that made her fall to the ground, having to be rushed to a hospital to undergo surgery but died from the injuries.

After the events, Kerry Bell, aged 48 , was arrested on charges of attempted murder when he was found sleeping near the scene of the attack, as he was known to live on the street. His bail was set at $2 million, the Los Angeles Times reported.

“Upon arrival, officers discovered that the suspect, later identified as Kerry Bell, had punched the victim in the face, causing him to fall to the ground and sustain a fractured skull,” Los Angeles police said.

Police and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority provided photos of the suspect to officers in the area, and within 70 minutes later, they found Bell. Investigators said the attack was unprovoked and without reason.

The Los Angeles County Medical Center issued a statement lamenting Shells’ death, and highlighted his virtues during his 38 of work as a nurse, reported CNN.

“Sandra worked tirelessly and selflessly to keep her patients safe and healthy, and will always be remembered as a kind, compassionate and generous nurse, with a helpful and caring nature, who was a favorite among colleagues and patients,” the statement said. “There will never be enough words to express our appreciation for your tremendous work and dedication.”

For her part, the Los Angeles County Supervisor and President of the Los Angeles Metro Board of Directors, Hilda Solís, highlighted from her Twitter account that she helped save countless lives during the pandemic and it is a heartbreaking loss.
