Meat Loaf, the American rock star whose debut ‘Bat Out of Hell’ became one of the best-selling albums of all time, has died at 74 years.

“Our hearts are broken to announce that the incomparable Meat Loaf passed away tonight surrounded by his wife Deborah, his daughters Pearl and Amanda and close friends“Said a publication of this January on the artist’s official Facebook page.

“We know how much it meant to many of you guys and we truly appreciate all the love and support as we go through this time of grief over the loss of such an inspiring artist and such a beautiful man. We appreciate your understanding of our need for privacy at this time,” the statement concluded.

The cause of death is still unclear, however, TMZ states that some sources assured him that Meat’s condition became critical because he became seriously ill with Covid.

Who was Meat Loaf?

Meat Loaf was born in Dallas, Texas on 27 September 1947. He was an only child, his mother a school teacher and gospel singer and his father a former police officer who developed alcoholism after being medically discharged from the US Army during World War II.

He got his nickname when his father said he looked as red as flesh at birth, before a high school football coach added the ‘Loaf’ to him. Other reports indicate that he wanted to adopt the nickname after suffering a childhood of bullying due to his overweight.

Meat Loaf first found success on the Broadway stage in the groundbreaking musical ‘Hair’, but has also appeared in such films as ‘Fight Club’, ‘Wayne’s World’ and ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show ‘ where he had a brief but memorable role as the hapless delivery boy Eddie.

The musician and actor, born Marvin Lee Aday, had a long career spanning more than six decades, in which he sold over 80 millions of records worldwide.

His singles, ‘Two of Three Ain’t Bad’ and ‘Paradise by the Dashboard Light’ were certified platinum in 2018.

Her hit ‘I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)’ was the best-selling hit in the UK in 1993 and earned him a Grammy Award.
