The Nigerian singer Davido celebrated this Friday the announcement that FIFA will use his song “Hayya Hayya (Better Together)”, performed with the American Trinidad Cardona and the Qatari Aisha, for the soundtrack of the Qatar World Cup in 2022.
“I am honored to appear on the official soundtrack of the FIFA World Cup! FIFA 2022!” exclaimed Davido on his Twitter social network account, where he has about 11 millions of followers. “This is for Africa!” the singer stressed, adding that “Naija (Nigeria) didn’t make it (play in the World Cup), but… Naija is going to be!”.
FIFA unveiled the song this Friday, coinciding with the group draw that will take place in Doha, Qatar.
“I have grown up all over the world. And the more I traveled, the more I realized that we are all one people”, Davido said in a statement issued through FIFA.
In this sense, he added: “Then , when this came to me (the opportunity to participate in the World Cup song), I jumped on it. Being part of this event that brings the whole world together and being part of this song? (…) How beautiful, man, how beautiful!” added the Nigerian singer.
“Hayya Hayya” -with influences from rhythm and blues (R&B) and reggae- will enliven the draw and symbolizes the ability of soccer to “build bridges in the world”, said the director of the commercial division of the Cup, Kay Madati.
The theme is the first of several that will sound throughout the coming months, as the date of the opening match of the tournament approaches, the next 21 November 2022.
Is the first time that the soundtrack of the competition is made up of several songs.
At 29 years old, Davido -his real name is David Adedeji Adeleke- has become one of the most popular afrobeat singers, with more than four million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Born in Atlanta (United States) in a Nigerian family, he decided to leave his studies in 2011 and go to Lagos, the most populous city in Nigeria; to dedicate himself to music, his great passion.
