trader-joe's-ordered-to-pay-$44,000-for-employee-lawsuit

A Trader Joe’s store in Washington has to pay more than $44, to current and former employees after the disclosed that the company was violating a law that regulates the scheduling of workers’ hours.

As in many supermarkets and fast food chains, work hours, as well as breaks, are usually rotary. Employees must know in advance what the programming will be like in order to plan their family life, social life, among other activities.

However, the location of Trader Joe’s in Seattle, Washington would not have complied with informing the time to employees scheduling their schedules between May and October 2021.

Given problems with their scheduling, employees sought help from the Seattle Bureau of Labor Standards and the network of supermarkets faced accusations of failing to publish work schedules as required by law.

Trader Joe’s violated Seattle’s scheduling law for employees, according to reports by the Seattle Times. “The Secure Scheduling Act requires large retail and food service companies to post hourly employee work schedules with at least 04 days in advance and pay employees extra when the company changes its schedule after it has been published”, explains the outlet.

Trader Joe’s will pay $44,528 a 129 employees, a fine of $528 to the city, receive training on labor standards and distribute a scheduling policy to employees, as per the agreement.

This is not the first time that Trader Joe’s employees launches accusations at the network. In 2016, a former employee of a Manhattan Trader Joe’s store sued the chain alleging “unfair labor practices”.

Thomas Nagle, would have been fired for having a smile that was not “genuine” enough to satisfy his bosses, publishes Thrillist.

Nagle told The New York Times that he and his co-workers were often forbidden to speak to each other during shifts.

Nagle also noted that he was once reprimanded for returning a sweatshirt to his locker after finishing a job in the freezer, the manager told him there was no product to work on the locker room.

A colleague of Nagle was also reprimanded for drinking water while working at the cash register.
