The Mexican driver Sergio “Checo” Pérez, 32 years old, third in the current Formula 1 World Championship, and the Oracle Red Bull Racing team have extended the contract that binds both parties for two more years.
“Checo” Pérez, winner, this Sunday, of the GP of Monaco, joined the Red Bull team at the end of 2020 and the following year, with 110 points, won the Azerbaijan GP and finished fourth in the World Championship, which was won by his teammate, the Dutchman Max Verstappen, current leader of the championship, followed by the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and of the Mexican pilot himself.
In the seven races held this year, Pérez has already added 110 points and has been on the podium four times, in addition to becoming the first Mexican to achieve pole position, in Saudi Arabia.
“It has been an incredible week for me”, commented Checo Pérez in a statement from the Red Bull team. “Winning in Monaco is a dream for any driver and then to be able to announce that I will stay with the team until 2022 makes me extremely happy. I am proud to be part of this team, in which I feel completely at home. We have achieved great moments as a team and this season we are showing it. Let’s see where we can go in the future”.
Red Bull director Christian Horner stressed that the Mexican had done “a fantastic job since joining the team.”
“This year he has climbed a new step and the distance with world champion Max Verstappen has been significantly reduced, as seen with his pole position in Jeddah and his powerful victory in Monaco. We are delighted that he is still with us until 2024. Together with Max, I think we have a driver pairing that can give us the biggest prizes in Formula One,” he added.
