georgia-teacher-shoots-and-kills-a-student-who-was-sitting-in-a-car

A college student was shot in Georgia early Saturday morning after a teacher from her school opened fire on the car she was sitting in.

Carroll County authorities, Georgia, reported that the incident began around midnight when Richard Sigman, a professor at the University of West Georgia, got into a verbal altercation with another man outside Leopoldo’s Pizza Napoletana restaurant in Carrollton.

As the situation escalated, the anonymous man Sigman argued with said the professor threatened to kill him, according to WSB-TV News.

Then security members approached Sigman and told him to leave. The professor began walking toward the nearby county courthouse parking lot and began shooting at a parked car. Anna Jones, a student at the University of West Georgia, was sitting in the vehicle at the time and was struck.

Jones was then rushed to nearby Tanner Medical Center. Around the 00: 27, local police were called to the hospital after receiving a report of a person suffering from a gunshot wound. The 27 year old was finally pronounced dead from her injuries after arriving at the medical center.

It is not known if Sigman and Jones knew each other or had any previous relationship, since they were affiliated with the same university. In a statement to WSB-TV on Saturday afternoon, the University of West Georgia confirmed that Sigman had been fired and expressed remorse over Jones’s death.

“The University of West Georgia learned of the loss of one of its students, Anna Jones, who passed away following an incident outside from campus today,” university president Dr. Brendan Kelly wrote in the statement. “UWG has terminated Richard Sigman’s employment and continues to work with the City of Carrollton Police Department, which is leading this ongoing investigation.”

The statement continued: “On behalf of the university , we wish to convey our deepest condolences to Anna’s family and many friends. We know that this news is difficult to process and affects many members of our university community. We ask that you keep Anna’s family, friends, and all who have been touched by this tragedy in your thoughts during this tremendously difficult time.”

Sigman now faces serious charges, including one count of murder, three counts of aggravated assault and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime .

he A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the bereaved family of Jones. As of this Sunday afternoon, he had raised more than $ 16, 499 dollars, far exceeding his goal of $7, 500.

“He was a beautiful and sweet soul and his smile would light up a room!” wrote the page’s organizer, Jennifer Lepard. “As with most parents, you never think you’ll need life insurance for your child. This was a senseless and devastating crime that left many broken hearts, a grieving community, and a grieving family.”
