One day after seeing Pep Guardiola praise his style of play and his hunger to win, the Argentinian Julián Álvarez responded with a brace in the 6-0 win against Nottingham Forest.

Pep Guardiola gave the responsibility, to the 22 year-old Argentine, of being a starter for the first time in a match official since he arrived at Manchester City, from River Plate. He positioned him as a point guard from the right in a 4-3-3 system along with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.

“We are delighted with Julián Álvarez. Everyone talks about Haaland, but Julián is an exceptional player”, Guardiola declared about the Argentine, in the pre-game. Already in action, he scored his first goal at the minute 65 after a cross shot from the right sector of the area.

Played the 65 minutes against Nottingham and showed that Guardiola was right when he said: “He had a lot of impact in the preseason and now also, in the Community Shield, in the Camp Nou scored a hat-trick with no problems and was involved in both goals in the last match”.

And he performed as a striker from the right, when it was expected that the Argentine player would normally be a replacement for Erling Haaland. This time Guardiola tested them both and they ended up with five goals between them, thanks also to the Norwegian’s hat-trick.

It should be noted that Álvarez had already scored his first official goal for Manchester City . It was against Liverpool FC in the Community Shield, a trophy that the sky-blue team lost against Jürgen Klopp’s team.
