The head of diplomacy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, expressed his confidence on Wednesday that the nuclear agreement with Iran can be reactivated “in the coming days”, after having received reasonable responses from Tehran and the United States. Joined. A similar position was expressed by the White House National Security spokesman, John Kirby.

“I am confident that in the coming days we will not lose this momentum and can close an agreement” with Iran, he said Borrell after an informal meeting of European foreign ministers in Prague.

“It is clear that there is common ground, that we have an agreement that takes into consideration, it seems to me, everyone’s concerns,” he indicated. Brussels took the initiative to try to restore the nuclear pact of 2015, which began to crumble in 2018, after leaving the US during the Donald Trump administration.

The new proposal that is analyzed by the parties implies a relief of the economic sanctions for Iran that allows it to sell its oil, in exchange for drastically limiting its nuclear plan. Both Tehran and Washington have sent a series of amendments to the document proposed by Europe, none of them considered excessive by the European Union. Israel, for its part, has increased the pressure to block the agreement.

“Closer today than weeks ago”

Kirby, for his part, said that the United States is “cautiously optimistic” about the progress made in the negotiations. “We are now closer to an agreement than we were weeks or months ago,” said Kirby, who indicated that Washington “is cautiously optimistic about the possibility that things continue to move in the right direction.”

Meanwhile, the Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir Abdolahian, stated in Moscow, where he is visiting, that the decision on the agreement could come “soon”, although he made it a condition that work be done on the guarantees that Tehran demands the UN atomic agency.

Specifically, Iran calls for the closure of an investigation by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) into the origin of trace amounts of uranium found in the country that had not been declared and that could indicate that there were secret activities. The US, for its part, hopes that Tehran will not make the return to the nuclear pact conditional on the closure of the investigation.
