A 60-year-old woman was shot to death this Sunday at her residence in the municipality of Trujillo Alto (north) by her 67-year-old husband, who later committed suicide, this is the first femicide committed in Puerto Rico in 2023 despite being in enforce a state of emergency for gender violence.

According to a statement released by the Police, the crime occurred at dawn today, on Vía Erie street in the Bosque del Lago urbanization, Encantada, in Trujillo Alto.

The woman was identified as Carmen Torruella and died after receiving several bullet wounds from her husband Rafael López, who later shot himself.

Agent Calixto Camaño, attached to the Carolina CIC Homicide Division, took charge of the investigation together with prosecutor Kristhia Lois.

According to the Puerto Rico Gender Equality Observatory, from the beginning of 2022 until November 30, a total of 62 femicides were registered on the island, between direct and indirect, of which 14 were classified as intimate, alarming data. on an island of just over 3 million inhabitants.

The escalation in murders of women on the island occurs despite the fact that Governor Pedro Pierluisi extended the state of emergency due to gender violence, which had entered into force in January 2021.
